Istria has many attractions and interesting locations worth a visit, but one of the main reasons why the tourists come there is to enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic sea. Hence we present you a selection of a few locations and beaches in Istria that are well known for their beauty and appeal.

Whether you want to enjoy sand, pebbles or rocky beach, Medulin is a place for you. This town in the south of Istria has some of the top beaches of the peninsula. If you fancy building castles in the sand then beach Bijeca, together with Belvedere beach, is ideal for you. There is a third beach right after these two, Alba Chiara, however, it is a pebble one so if you don't like sand sticking to your clothes and skin, enjoy the summer activities there. All three beaches have many cafes, facilities and snack bars so when you want to do something other than just sunbathing, there is plenty of opportunity for all kinds of family and individual activities. Bear in mind that these beaches are highly popular among tourists so if you would like to „go where local people do“, then proceed to Skrape beach which is favourite among the locals and it characterised by its rocky coast and crystal clear water. The bottom is covered in pebbles which makes the beach even more interesting.

If you wish to find a more private place for bathing and enjoying summer sun, you don't have to go far from Medulin. Cape Kamenjak is the southernmost part of the Istrian peninsula with a coastline that stretches over 30 kilometers and it has plenty of secluded coves and tiny beaches where you can find your private oasis away from the crowded places. It also the sunniest spot in Istria, due to its microclimate with little rain and warm and dry summers. The area of Kamenjak is a protected landscape with characteristic flora and fauna with more than 50 butterfly species. Visiting is possible between 7am and 9pm every day. Admission is free if you go on foot or ride a bike, while all vehicles pay entrance fee (in the period from June to September).

In the north part of Istria, some of the popular beaches are Materada in Poreč and Koversada in Vrsar. Materada is just 10 minutes away if you go on foot from the centre of Poreč and this pebble beach is ideal for families and pet owners. The beach is bordered by pine forest whose shade serves as a great option for escaping hot summer sun. Koversada nudist beach is located at the beginning of Lim bay right next to Vrsar and it is ideal place for naturalists. If you are looking for a sandy beach in the north, then you could choose Zambratija near Umag, it is a family friendly place with a beach and snack bar facilities, and there are a few smaller neighbouring beaches that are also sandy.

Istria has many beaches that are beautiful and diverse so there should be no trouble finding the one that is ideal for you, whether you like to enjoy beach parties and lounge bars by the sea or wish to retreat to a less crowded, small private part of the coast. Just remember to wear sunscreen, as no matter which beach you choose for swimming, they are all equally sunny.
